Kahoot!ing on Grandparents Day

When it comes to the world of Grandparenting, Kahoot! Community Team member Steph offers us some wonderful insights and takes a look at families Kahoot!’ing together on Grandparents Day.

Behind the scenes of the Kahoot! family there’s a vibrant, committed group of individuals all with their own talents and stories, each bringing something unique to the brand.

These individual insights and experiences of the world help us shape our work and build a better product, which is why we share them and learn from each other.

And when it comes to learning more about the world of Grandparenting, Community Team member Steph offers some wonderful insights. It’s all thanks to her own special bond with her grandmother, Beryl.

Grandparents day

I have spent 28 years of my life in the great company of my wonderful Grandmother, Beryl. Beryl is now 87 and our special bond is just as special as it was when I was younger. The Kahoot! Community team often listen to me talk of my weekends spent at Beryl’s care home having a sherry and chatting afternoons away.

I often think that it’s the little things that Grandparents do that really makes a difference when it comes to creating that special bond. More often or not it’s not what they do but that they do it … and they do it with love.

"More often or not it’s not what they do but that they do it … and they do it with love."

This is not only true for me but also for many of our awesome Kahoot! community. Given my strong relationship with my grandmother, I was particularly moved by a tweet shared by Mrs Lori Simon (@WT2ndGrade) detailing how her students and their Grandparents had participated in a ‘ Grandparents Day Kahoot!’.

This magical moment deserved more than a Twitter shout out or a coveted stash of Kahoot! merchandise … it required a one to one chat with not only Mrs Simon but one of her tech savvy students and of course, their Kahoot!’ing Grandparent.

With three clicks of my Kahoot! slippers and a little help from Google Hangouts I was quickly transported to Kalona, Iowa where I was introduced to three Kahoot! heroes: Mrs. Simon, Addie (a second grade student) and her grandmother, Ginny.

Grandparents day

I sat back with a cup of tea and listened intently as Addie detailed excitedly how she enjoyed showing her grandmother what she learns at school and how having Ginny there made the day even more memorable.

“I was excited to see the students with iPads! It was great to see lots of excitement and engagement over a Government unit review!”

I was excited to see the students with iPads! It was great to see lots of excitement and engagement over a Government unit review!” Ginny exclaimed as she animatedly chatted about how being invited into her granddaughter’s classroom provided an exceptional opportunity to learn about how technology is used on a daily basis. “I have never seen Kahoot! before. It’s so easy and straightforward.”

Addie’s grandmother was a Kahoot! whiz by the end of the session, and by the end of our chat I felt overwhelmed to learn that Kahoot! was not only part of the classroom, but more amazingly, it was an instrument in achieving a special bonding (and learning) moment between a grandparent and grandchild.

These magical moments, in my opinion, are worth highlighting, as they break down preconceived notions about technology and generational gaps.
